Description
Stromatolites at 3.5 billion years old are the earth's oldest living things. The earth is 4 billion years old. These were uncovered in the Ottawa River a few years ago when the water level dropped to lower than it has ever been. There only a few sites in the world, one in Australia, one in the US and here in Ottawa - A weird feeling to stand on something that old

Great photo Stephanie. There are actually two sites in Western Australia. One in Cervantes and one in Shark Bay (both north of Perth.) There are thrombolites in Lake Clifton (south of Perth) which are closely related to stromatolites. I believe there are some sites in the Eastern States as well.
Stephanie Moore replied:
Thanks, Elaine - they were uncovered by the lowest water level in history and sadly, they are all covered over again. It was a huge site
